The Different Types of Jeep Wranglers
When it comes to choosing a vehicle that can handle off-roading, choosing the Jeep Wrangler is a no-brainer. However, determining which type of Jeep Wrangler you want is a different story. There are three main types of Jeep Wranglers to choose from: the Sport, Sahara, and Rubicon. In addition, a series of limited edition models are also released each year. In 2020 there are a whopping eight limited edition models to choose from. With so many incredible options, deciding which ride is right for you is a serious challenge. To help you out, we’ve composed a side-by-side comparison of all the different types of Jeep Wranglers offered in 2020.
Three main types of Jeep Wranglers
Sport
The Jeep Wrangler Sport is the most bare-bones Wrangler model and the least expensive. It presents an ideal option for those who want to make significant modifications to their rig.
The Sport comes equipped with 17-inch x 7.5-inch black steel styled wheels, normal duty suspension, and eight-speed automatic transmission, which is calibrated to deliver maximum torque to all four wheels and optimize shift points. From the factory, they are outfitted with a soft top; however, you have the option to upgrade to a Black Freedom Top 3-Piece hardtop.
Its safety features include hill start assist, electronic roll mitigation, and a ParkView Rear Back-Up Camera, which helps identify obstacles behind the vehicle that aren’t easily viewable in exterior mirrors.
Sahara
The Sahara comes with all the capabilities of the Sport as well as additional upgraded features such as 18-inch x 7.5-inch polished wheels with gray spokes, body-color fender flares, and heavy-duty suspension with gas shocks. Built with comfort in mind, the Sahara also features cloth low-back bucket seats, a leather-wrapped steering wheel, and power front windows with one-touch down.
Rubicon
For those looking for a vehicle that is ready to hit the trails straight from the factory, the Rubicon is the way to go. The Rubicon model is built to tackle any terrain without requiring any significant modifications.
Its off-roading capabilities are enhanced by features such as its LT285/70R17C BSW off-road tires, rock protection sill rails, and performance suspension. In addition, the Rubicon also comes equipped with a 4:1 Rock-Trac® heavy-duty part-time four-wheel-drive system that allows the vehicle to crawl at lower speeds with greater control and includes Tru-Lok front and rear electronic locking for unbeatable off-road capability.
On the inside, the Rubicon features premium cloth low-back bucket seats with optional leather trim and a leather-wrapped steering wheel. To keep you safe, the Rubicon offers all safety features provided in the Sahara and Sport models as well as an optional remote-start system (not available with manual transmission).
Limited edition Jeep Wrangler models
Black and Tan
The 2020 Wrangler Black and Tan features a classic, rugged style that is true to the Jeep Brand. It incorporates color-coordinated tan cloth seats and a tan premium Sunrider soft top, which contrast nicely with its dark instrument panel, matte black body, and black side steps. The Black and Tan model features machined 17-inch aluminum wheels with a granite finish and rugged all-terrain tires that are ready to take on the trails. Its additional capabilities include electronic roll mitigation, electronic stability control, hill start assist, push-button start, and hydraulic assist brake booster.
Willys
The limited edition 2020 Willys model is inspired by the original 1948 Willys Overland CJ-3A—a.k.a., the father of recreational vehicles. It includes heavy-duty trail-rated component upgrades such as enhanced underbody armor with heavy-duty rock rails, the available Sport LED Lighting Group, and high-performance shock absorbers to create a smooth ride and provide optimal control. Further enhancing its off-roading capabilities, the Willys features 17-inch gloss black five-spoke wheels that shows off a gray pad print of an original Willys design. From an aesthetic standpoint, the Willys boasts a redefined, timeless appearance with gloss black exterior detailing on grille throats and attractive headlamp inserts.
Freedom
The 2020 Jeep Wrangler Freedom Edition pays tribute to our brave American service members. For every model built, a donation is made to military charities. Honoring those who served, the vehicle features special edition badging and details, such as military-themed decals on the hood, seats embroidered with a military-inspired Oscar Mike logo, and an aluminum data plate on the rear swing gate inspired by the information plates on military Jeep vehicles. The Freedom model offers many of the same features as the Sport model as well as premium off-road rock rails, off-road steel bumpers, a premium black soft top, and a cast rear differential cover.
The Sport and Sahara Altitude
The Sport and Sahara Altitude feature a similar appearance and many of the same capabilities with a few select differences. While the Sport Altitude is capped with a black three-piece Freedom Top® hardtop with a hardtop headliner to reduce exterior noise, the Sahara Altitude has a body-color version. Another difference between the models is that the Sport Altitude boasts interior cloth seats while the Sahara Altitude model has seats with a black leather trim.
In terms of similarities, both models feature black interior accents, 18-inch five-spoke gloss black wheels, fog lamps, and an iconic seven-slot grille with headlamp inserts.
North Edition
The North Edition is specially designed for those who need a vehicle that can stand up to the challenges of cold climates. Whether Mother Nature dishes out snow, hail, sleet, or slush, the North Edition can handle it all. Examples of its winter-ready features include black front tow hooks, a black three-piece FreedomTop hardtop, all-terrain tires, and a Selec-Trac Full-Time 4x4 system. To keep you comfortable, the North Edition also includes heated front seats and a heated steering wheel for extra-cold days.
Rubicon Recon
The Rubicon Recon features all the components offered in the Rubicon as well as upgrades such as a 2.0L I4 DOHC DI turbo engine with eTorque that offers 270 horsepower, new 17-inch machined and black-painted wheels, and standard eight-speed automatic 850RE transmission. Its comfortable and stylish interior features sophisticated black leather-trimmed seats and a soft-touch midbolster with red stitching accents and bold red seatbelts. Ready to tackle any terrain, it also features huge 33-inch mud terrain tires as well as front and rear steel bumpers.
